Barr Laboratories, Inc.
Barr Laboratories, Inc.,
the North American generic pharmaceutical subsidiary, develops, manufactures and
markets more than 120 generic pharmaceuticals in five core therapeutic categories:
female healthcare, oncology, cardiovascular, anti-infective and psychotherapeutic
pharmaceuticals. Barr Laboratories currently manufactures and markets approximately
25 oral contraceptives, which represent the largest category of the Company's U.S.
generic portfolio.

PLIVA, based in Zagreb, Croatia,
serves as the European headquarters for Barr Pharmaceuticals. Established in 1921 and
acquired by Barr in 2006, PLIVA, along with its subsidiaries, is a leading Central and
Eastern European (CEE) pharmaceutical company with a portfolio of more than 1,025 products
that compete in the key markets of Croatia, Poland, Germany and Russia. PLIVA's product
portfolio includes solid dose forms, injectables, creams/ointments, over-the-counter (OTC)
products, cytostatics, and active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs). PLIVA is actively
developing generic biologic products for European and North American markets. PLIVA is
listed on the London and Zagreb Stock Exchanges.
Duramed Pharmaceuticals, Inc.
Duramed Pharmaceuticals, Inc., which develops and markets proprietary (branded) pharmaceutical
products in North America, focuses primarily on products for women and emphasizes the
development and marketing of products for reproductive and menopausal needs. Currently, Duramed
markets 27 proprietary pharmaceutical products.
Research and Development Investment
Barr's investment in research and development
has increased steadily from approximately $76 million in fiscal 2002, to $248 million in 2007. Barr
is committed to ongoing investment in proprietary and generic product development, as well as expansion
of its emerging presence in generic biologics.
Products in development include a wide variety of
dosage forms and delivery technologies such as tablets and capsules, extended or delayed release, oral
disintegrating tablets, patches, nasal sprays, ophthalmics, injectables, creams, trans-vaginal ring delivery
technology, and generic biologics. The Company also develops and supplies active pharmaceutical ingredients
(APIs). In its U.S. proprietary product development program, the Company has several projects awaiting FDA
approval, additional products in phase III clinical development, and a robust program of projects in phase
I/II development stages in the area of women's health.
Research and development expenditures for generic
activities typically include those related to internal personnel, third-party bioequivalence studies and
costs for raw materials used in product development.
Proprietary development costs typically include
those related to internal personnel, clinical studies, third-party toxicology studies, clinical trials
conducted by third-party clinical research organizations, and raw materials.
In the generic biologics arena, the Company has a number of biologics products in active development for European and North American markets, and has state-of-the-art development facilities, the ability to scale-up manufacturing quantities for products with minimal additional capital investment, and recognized scientific excellence. In 2006, the Company began
construction of a biopharmaceutical development facility in Croatia to support development and commercialization
of its pipeline of generic biologics products.
Corporate Development
To support its business strategies and expand its product
portfolio and business, Barr continually evaluates strategic product acquisitions, new technology arrangements
including new technology platforms, and corporate mergers and acquisitions. In addition, the Company is actively
exploring opportunities to expand its key product offerings and marketing reach in major Western, Central, Eastern
European and Russian Federation markets through acquisition and other business-development initiatives.
