Azithromycin

Azithromycin was developed by PLIVA and licensed to Pfizer for sale in certain territories. In the U.S., Barr's azithromycin product is the generic equivalent of Pfizer's Zithromax® antibacterial treatment product, available in tablet, oral suspension and injectable formulations.

Following the expiry of the azithromycin compound patent in the U.S., in November 2005, Barr launched the generic tablet version. In July 2006, the Company launched the first generic oral suspension version in the U.S. In January 2007, the Company also received approval from the FDA to market its injectable form and launched that product in the U.S. in the quarter ended September 30, 2007.
